The basics

What is a DID number?

DID stands for direct inward dialing. It is a real phone number that is not tied to a SIM card or a wire in a wall. Calls to it are handed to the internet and arrive at a SIP account, which rings whatever app or phone system is signed in.
  1. A caller dials+44 20 ... from any phone
  2. The phone networkRoutes it like any local call
  3. Your DIDThe number points to the internet
  4. Your SIP loginThe call arrives as SIP

Rings whatever is signed in

  • Phone app
  • Computer
  • Office PBX
The same number goes the other way too: calls you make from the SIP login show it as your caller ID.

Here is why that matters: the number and the place you answer it are no longer the same thing. A London number can ring a laptop in Lisbon. One number can ring a phone app during the day and an office phone system at night. And because nothing physical moves, a new number is ready in minutes rather than days.

The name comes from old office switchboards, where DID let outside callers reach an extension directly instead of going through the operator. Today the word mostly means a number for a SIP trunk or a SIP account. You will also see it called a SIP number, a DDI in the UK, or simply a virtual number.

Incoming calls

What a DID really costs once the calls come in

Most DID providers advertise a low monthly price and charge for every incoming minute on top. Slide to your call volume and see a month side by side.

1. Where is the number?

2. Incoming minutes a month

500

A small business line often takes 300 to 2,000 minutes a month.

Twilio prices are its public list prices for a local number, read 26 October 2026, including its per-minute charge for delivering calls to a SIP connection where it publishes one. Calls you make are charged separately everywhere, including with us.

One month, US local number

  • SimVala, yearly planFlat, any number of minutes$0.99
  • SimVala, monthly planFlat, any number of minutes$2.99
  • Twilio, per minute$1.15 a month + $0.0125 a minute$7.40

At 500 minutes, a per-minute number costs $6.41 more than ours on a yearly plan.

Per-minute inbound

Cheap number, then a charge for every minute someone talks to you. Twilio, and many others, bill this way.

Paid channels

Unlimited minutes, but you rent each simultaneous call as a channel. Telnyx and DIDWW offer this, priced separately.

Flat price, ours

One monthly price for the number, with incoming calls included and 10 calls at once on each SIP login.

Setup

How to connect a DID to your SIP app or PBX

Three steps, and the first two happen on our site.
  1. 1

    Get a SIP login

Order a SIP account with call credit. The username, password and server appear on your order page.

    SIP account
  2. 2

    Add a number

Pick the country your callers are in. Calls to it ring the SIP login on the same account.

    Numbers by country
  3. 3

    Sign in and answer

Enter the login in a SIP app, or as a trunk on 3CX, FreePBX or Asterisk. Calls out show your number.

    Pick a SIP app

On an office phone system

Your PBX signs in to the SIP login like a phone would. Each incoming call then follows the inbound route you set for the DID.

  1. Someone callsFrom any phone, to the number on your account
  2. Your numberRings your SIP login instead of a phone app
  3. Your trunkThe PBX is signed in, so the call arrives there
  4. Inbound routeYour rule picks where the call goes
  5. Your teamAn extension, a ring group or a voice menu

Step-by-step trunk settings for 3CX, FreePBX and Asterisk are on the SIP trunk page.

Capacity

How many calls can a DID take at once?

A number has no limit of its own. The limit is the line behind it, usually counted in channels: one channel is one call in progress.

With us, each SIP login carries 10 calls at once. That covers most small offices: ten people on the phone at the same moment is a busy team. You do not rent channels separately, and incoming calls are not metered.

Not sure how many you need? The channel calculator on the SIP trunk page works it out from your busiest hour, using the same Erlang B method phone companies use.

Texts are separate from channels. Every number includes unlimited texts in and out, which many DID providers sell as an add-on or switch on only after a few months.

Documents

Do you need documents to buy a DID?

At most carriers, yes, for many countries. Regulators in parts of Europe and in Australia want to know who holds each local number, and carriers pass that on to you. We do not ask for documents.
  • Germany ElsewhereTwilio sells German local numbers to businesses only, with an address in the number's area and a trade register entry or trade licence. Telnyx asks for ID, a signed form and a recent utility bill. With us: none
  • France ElsewhereTwilio asks individuals for government ID and proof of a French address; businesses need a K-bis and SIREN number. With us: none
  • Italy ElsewhereTwilio asks for ID, an address inside the number's area with proof, and an Italian fiscal code. With us: none
  • United Kingdom ElsewhereTwilio asks individuals for ID and proof of a UK address. With us: none
  • Australia ElsewhereTwilio asks for Australian-issued ID or a passport, an Australian address, and business use only. With us: none

Jargon

DID vs DDI vs toll-free vs SIP trunk

DID
Direct inward dialing. A phone number that delivers calls to a SIP account or phone system. The North American term.
DDI
Direct dial-in. The same thing, in UK and European English. A DDI number and a DID number are interchangeable.
Toll-free number
A number the caller rings for free, such as 1-800 in the US, while the owner pays for every minute. We do not sell these yet.
SIP trunk
The connection between your phone system and the phone network. DIDs are the numbers that ride on it.
Virtual number
The everyday word for a number with no SIM. Ours are DIDs that also send and receive texts.
Extension
An internal number inside your phone system, like 201. A DID can ring one extension directly.

Buying

How to choose a DID provider

Eight questions that reveal the real price before you sign up anywhere, including with us.
  1. 1

Do incoming calls cost per minute?

This is usually the biggest line on the bill. Ask for the inbound rate, not just the monthly price.

  2. 2

How many calls can ring at once?

Check whether channels are included or rented separately, and how many.

  3. 3

    Is there a setup fee?

Some providers charge an activation fee per number, or a one-time fee per channel order.

  4. 4

Can the number send and receive texts?

Many DIDs are voice only, or need an add-on.

  5. 5

    What documents do they need?

For European and Australian numbers, often ID and proof of a local address.

  6. 6

Can it be your caller ID?

Calls out should show the same number people call you on.

  7. 7

Does it work with your app or PBX?

Any provider that uses standard SIP sign-in works with Linphone, 3CX, FreePBX and Asterisk.

  8. 8

How do you pay, and what happens if you stop?

Look for a clear renewal date and a grace period, so a missed payment does not cost you the number overnight.

Our answers: no inbound per-minute charge, 10 calls at once per login, no setup fee, unlimited texts, no documents, your number as caller ID, standard SIP sign-in, and renewal from your balance with a 3-day grace period. What we do not offer yet: toll-free numbers and moving an existing number to us.

Method

Where these numbers come from

Our prices on this page come straight from our live catalog. Other providers' prices and rules come from their own pricing and regulatory pages, read on 26 October 2026. Where a provider did not publish a figure, such as a channel price, we say so instead of guessing.

DID number questions, answered

What is a DID number?+

A DID (direct inward dialing) number is an ordinary phone number that delivers its calls over the internet to a SIP account, instead of to a SIM card or a copper line. Callers dial it like any other number; you answer in a SIP app or on your phone system.

Is a DID the same as a SIP number or a virtual number?+

Nearly. DID is the telecom word, used mostly in North America; in the UK and Europe it is often called a DDI. A SIP number is a DID delivered over SIP. Virtual number is the everyday word for the same kind of number, often with texts included, as ours are.

How much does a DID number cost?+

With us, from $1.99 a month depending on the country, or less per month on a yearly plan. A US DID is $2.99 a month or $0.99 a month paid yearly. Incoming calls have no per-minute charge, and there is no setup fee.

Do I pay for incoming calls on a DID?+

Not with us. Many carriers charge for every incoming minute: Twilio's list price for a US local number is $0.0085 a minute, plus $0.004 a minute to deliver the call to a SIP connection. Ours have a flat monthly price. Calls you make are charged from your SIP credit, as everywhere.

How many calls can one DID take at once?+

A DID itself has no fixed limit; the line behind it does. Each SimVala SIP login carries 10 calls at once. Many carriers sell this capacity separately as channels.

Can a DID number receive text messages?+

Ours do: every number includes unlimited texts in and out. Some apps and banks refuse virtual numbers for security codes, so do not rely on one for those.

Do I need documents to buy a DID?+

Not from us. At many carriers, local numbers in Germany, France, Italy, the UK and Australia need ID and proof of a local address, sometimes business papers too. We ask for none of that.

Can I use my DID with 3CX, FreePBX or Asterisk?+

Yes. Your PBX signs in to the SIP login, the DID rings it, and your inbound route sends the call to an extension, ring group or menu. The SIP trunk page has setup steps for all three.
