Unlimited data eSIMs: what "unlimited" really means
An unlimited eSIM has no data cap that cuts you off, but most slow down after a daily amount of fast data. Whether you need one depends on how much you use. Often a data plan or a 1 GB-a-day pass is cheaper. Check your trip:

The 3 kinds of "unlimited"
"Unlimited" on a travel eSIM rarely means full speed forever. Before you buy one, find out which of these it is:
No cap listed
No data limit and no stated slowdown. Read the fine print anyway: networks can still manage very heavy use.
A daily fast allowance
Full speed up to a daily amount, then slower until the next day. Airalo's is 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps.
Network fair use
The local operator may slow very heavy users, especially when the network is busy. Holafly says this lasts no more than a day.
None of these is a trick on its own. A daily allowance that is clearly stated is fair and often plenty. The problem is a plan that says "unlimited" and hides the slowdown.

Is an unlimited data eSIM really unlimited?+
It has no fixed data cap that cuts you off. But most unlimited plans on the market slow down after a daily amount of high-speed data, or can be slowed by the local network after heavy use. Check the plan's fair use terms.
What is a fair usage policy?+
A rule that lets a provider slow your speed after heavy use, so one person cannot overload the network. For example, Airalo slows its unlimited plans to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day, until the daily reset.
What can I do on a slowed speed?+
Messages and email work, and maps and browsing load more slowly. HD video will not play well: Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for HD, and slowed speeds are usually well under that.
Do I need unlimited data for travel?+
Usually not. Most travellers use a few gigabytes a week. A fixed data plan or a 1 GB-a-day pass is often cheaper; unlimited makes sense if you stream a lot or work online.
What is a 1 GB-a-day pass?+
A plan that gives you 1 GB at full speed every day, then continues at 384 to 1024 kbps until the next day. It is not called unlimited, because it slows down after the daily gigabyte.
Which is better, unlimited or a day pass?+
If you use under 1 GB a day, a day pass is usually cheaper. If you use much more, every day, an unlimited plan avoids the slowdown. The calculator on this page compares both for your trip.
Do unlimited eSIMs come with a phone number?+
No. Travel eSIMs, including unlimited ones, are data only. For a number, use a virtual number alongside it.
