What an APN does, and when it goes wrong

The APN tells your phone how to reach the internet through your carrier. Your phone normally reads it from the SIM, so most people never see it. It matters when something goes wrong:

  • Full signal, no dataThe classic sign of a missing or wrong APN. Calls and texts still work, but apps and websites do not load.
  • Picture messages failMMS uses its own settings. Each carrier page lists them under Picture messages, where the carrier has them.
  • New or imported phonePhones bought abroad, or moved from another network, sometimes keep the old carrier's APN.
  • A carrier that rents a network33 carriers here run on another company's network, like giffgaff on O2. They often need their own APN, not the host's.

What every APN field means

Most of the fields can stay as they are. The APN itself matters most, then the username and password if your carrier uses them. This table says what each field does and what to put in it.

FieldWhat it doesUsually
NameA label for the list. It only helps you find the entry later.Anything, like the carrier's name
APNThe address of your carrier's internet gateway. This is the one value that must be exactly right. From your carrier
Username and passwordSome carriers ask for them, most do not. Only 35 of the 151 carriers on this page use them.Blank, unless listed
Authentication typeHow the username and password are sent. PAP and CHAP are the two choices.None, or PAP if there is a username
APN typeWhat the entry is used for: default is internet, mms is picture messages, supl helps GPS, dun is hotspot.default, supl
APN protocolIPv4, IPv6 or both. Newer networks often prefer IPv4/IPv6.Leave as it is
MCC and MNCThe country and network codes, like 234 and 33 for EE in the UK. The phone reads them from the SIM.Filled in for you
Proxy and portOld settings from the WAP days. Modern internet APNs almost never use them.Blank
MMSC, MMS proxy, MMS portOnly for picture and group messages. A wrong value breaks MMS, never normal data. From your carrier, if any

Fix mobile data in four steps

  1. Check the switches

Mobile data must be on. Abroad, data roaming must be on too. Airplane mode must be off.

  2. Reset or restart

On Android, tap Reset to default in the APN menu. On any phone, restart it. This fixes most APN problems.

  3. Type your carrier's APN

Find your carrier above, and copy the APN, then the username and password if it has them.

  4. Select it and restart

On Android, tap the new entry so its dot is filled. Then restart the phone and try a website.

APNs when you travel abroad

Your own SIM keeps its home APN when you roam. Do not type a local carrier's APN into it. The data still flows through your home carrier, which bills you for roaming, so the home settings stay right.

A local SIM bought on arrival is different. It needs that country's carrier APN, and phones from another region sometimes do not know it. That is where this page helps most: pick the country, find the carrier on the SIM pack, and copy the values.

A travel eSIM usually sets its own APN when it installs, so there is nothing to type. If data does not start, the eSIM not working guide walks through every fix.

How we checked 151 carriers

Every carrier card carries a badge that says where its values come from, with links to the sources at the bottom of the card.

  • 99

    From the carrier

Taken from the carrier's own help or support pages.

  • 42

    Cross-checked

At least two sources agree, including the carrier databases built into Android and GNOME.

  • 10

    Partly confirmed

Only some values could be confirmed. If data still fails, ask the carrier.

APN settings, answered

What is an APN?+

APN stands for Access Point Name. It is the address your phone uses to connect to your carrier's mobile data. Get it wrong and data stops working, even with full signal.

Where do I find my APN?+

On Android: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, then Access Point Names. On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Mobile Data Options, Mobile Data Network. Or look up your carrier on this page.

Why is my mobile data not working with full signal?+

A missing or wrong APN is the most common reason. Check that mobile data and data roaming are on, then compare your APN with your carrier's settings here.

Do I need an APN for an eSIM?+

Usually not. Travel eSIMs and most carrier eSIMs set the APN when they install. If data fails, check the APN your eSIM provider gives you.

Does changing the APN affect calls and texts?+

No. The APN only controls mobile data and picture messages. Calls and normal texts keep working whatever the APN says.

What APN type should I choose?+

For the internet entry, default, supl works on almost every carrier. Add mms only if the same entry should also carry picture messages.

Should I change the APN when I travel abroad?+

Not for your own SIM. Roaming uses your home carrier's APN. You only need a local APN if you put a local SIM from that country in your phone.
