112: the number that works across Europe and beyond
112 is special. It is the law in every EU country, and 100 places in our list confirm it works from any mobile. Many countries keep their own numbers as well, like 999 in the UK, and both reach the same help.
On many phones, dialling 112 or 911 anywhere connects you to the local emergency number, but not on every network, so always check the local number first. In the US, 911 is the number to remember: many networks forward 112, but it is not guaranteed.
Some countries split the services. In Japan, 110 is the police and 119 is an ambulance or fire. In Thailand, the police are on 191, an ambulance on 1669 and fire on 199. The lookup above shows the right split for each country.
Before you travel: 4 things to sort out
Five minutes before a trip saves a lot of panic later. Do these while you still have Wi-Fi and a clear head.
- Know the tourist policePlaces like Thailand, Egypt, Greece and Peru run them, and they usually speak English. The list is below.
- Keep a working SIM or eSIM in your phoneSome countries block emergency calls from phones with no SIM.
- Save your embassy's numberThey help with lost passports, arrests and hospital stays, not just emergencies.
- Learn to say where you areStreet, town, a landmark. Write your hotel's address in the local language too.
What to say when you call for help
Say where you are first
Street, town, a landmark. If the line drops, they can still send help.
Say what happened
Who is hurt, how many people, and whether there is a fire or someone dangerous. Answer their questions calmly and simply.
Stay on the line
Do not hang up until they tell you to. If the call drops, call back. Keep your phone free for their call.
Tourist police numbers
13 countries in our list run a police line for visitors. They are often easier for travellers to talk to, but in a real emergency, call the main number first.

Emergency calls with a travel eSIM, or with no SIM at all
A data-only travel eSIM has no phone number, but your phone can usually still place emergency calls. Phones are built to call emergency numbers over any network in range, even one you do not pay for.
A phone with no SIM at all is different. In some countries it still works, but several block emergency calls from phones with no SIM, to stop hoax calls. So do not rely on an old phone with an empty SIM tray.
Emergency calls are free from any phone in almost every country, including when you have no credit left. If a call will not connect, try 112, then the local number, then ask someone nearby to call.

Tap a country in the lookup above for tourist police, coast guard and other lines, plus the source for each number.
How we checked. Every number was checked against the UK government's and Canada's travel advice for that country, and against the European Commission's 112 pages for Europe. 236 of 242 entries are confirmed by a government source. Where the two governments disagreed, a third source decided and the entry says so.

Emergency numbers, answered
What is the emergency number in Europe?+
112. It works from any phone in every EU country, and in the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Turkey too. Some countries also keep their own numbers, like 999 in the UK, and both work.
Does 112 work in the US?+
Dial 911 in the US. Many US mobile networks forward 112 to 911, but it is not guaranteed, so 911 is the number to remember.
What is the emergency number in Thailand?+
191 for police, 1669 for an ambulance and 199 for fire. The tourist police, who usually speak English, are on 1155.
What is the emergency number in Japan?+
110 for police, and 119 for an ambulance or fire.
Can I call an emergency number without a SIM card?+
In some countries yes, in others no: several block emergency calls from phones with no SIM, to stop hoax calls. Keep a working SIM or eSIM in your phone, and do not rely on a phone with no SIM.
Can I call emergency numbers with a travel eSIM?+
A data-only travel eSIM has no phone number, but phones can usually still place emergency calls over any network in range. If your home SIM is still in the phone, emergency calls work through it too.
Are emergency calls free?+
Yes. Emergency calls are free from any phone in almost every country, including when you have no credit left.
