United Kingdom
+44
- From a mobile: +44, then the number. Drop the 0 at the start of the local number.
- To call out of the United Kingdom from a landline, start with 00.
+44 is shared with 3 other places: Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey. The digits after the code tell them apart.
Country code, exit code, area code: what is what
Three short codes, three different jobs. Mixing them up is the most common reason an international call fails.
- Country code. Picks the country you are calling, like 44 for the UK. Always comes right after the + or the exit code.
- Exit code. Tells your network the call leaves the country, like 011 from the US or 00 from most of Europe. Only needed on a landline.
- Area code. Picks a city or region inside the country, like 20 for London. It is part of the local number.
- The +. A shortcut for the exit code on any mobile. Hold the 0 key to type it, and it works from every country.
Put together, a London number called from abroad is +44 20 7946 0018. Our guide to how to call another country builds the exact digits for any call.

Why some countries share a code
A few codes cover more than one place. The biggest is +1, which 23 places in our list share, from the United States and Canada to Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic. They all use one numbering plan, and the 3-digit area code after the 1 tells them apart. That is also why a call between the US and much of the Caribbean needs no exit code, just 1 and the number.
