Install an eSIM on iPhone

Updated September 7, 2026 · SimVala editorial
In short

To install an eSIM on iPhone, open Settings, tap Cellular (or Mobile Data), tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan, choose Use QR Code, and scan the QR from your SimVala dashboard. Label the line and pick it for data. It takes about two minutes.

What you need first

  • An iPhone XS, XR, or newer
  • iOS reasonably up to date
  • A Wi-Fi or existing connection to install the profile
  • Your eSIM QR code, open in your SimVala dashboard on another screen

Install it in 4 steps

  1. 1

    Open Cellular settings

Go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data.

  2. 2

    Add eSIM

Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan, then choose Use QR Code.

  3. 3

    Scan the QR code

Point the camera at the QR code in your SimVala dashboard.

  4. 4

    Label and set default

Give the line a label like Travel, then choose it for cellular data. You are connected.

Menu names vary a little

Wording can differ slightly between OS versions, but the flow is the same: find the SIM or cellular settings, add an eSIM, and scan the QR from your dashboard.

Troubleshooting

The camera will not scan the code

Open the QR on a second screen or print it, and make sure it is well lit and in focus. You can also enter the details manually if your dashboard shows them.

No service after install

Turn the line on in Settings, enable Data Roaming for the travel line (this is normal for travel eSIMs and does not add charges), and toggle Airplane Mode once.

It says the code is no longer valid

Each QR installs once. If you already installed it, the eSIM is on your phone. If not, contact support.

Installing an eSIM on iPhone: FAQ

Will this delete my main SIM?+

No. The eSIM is added alongside your existing SIM, so both work at once.

Do I need internet to install?+

Yes, once, over Wi-Fi or your current connection. After that the eSIM works on its own data.

Can I keep my number for calls?+

Yes. Keep your home line for calls and texts and set the eSIM as your data line.

How do I turn it off later?+

In Settings, Cellular, select the line and turn it off, or delete the eSIM when you are done.
