The pattern is simple: flagship phones from the last few years almost always have eSIM. Older, budget, and China-market phones are where it gets tricky.

Three ways to check in 10 seconds

A model list can never cover every regional version. Your phone itself can tell you for certain.

Dial *#06#

Open the phone app and dial *#06#. If an EID appears, you have eSIM. Not every phone shows it here, so if you only see an IMEI, try check 2.

Look in About

iPhone: Settings, General, About. Android: Settings, About phone. An EID listed there means eSIM. On iPhone, this screen also shows the carrier lock.

Try adding one

Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, then +. Samsung: Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Add eSIM. If the option is there, you have eSIM.

Is your phone unlocked?

Having eSIM is only half the answer. Your phone also has to be unlocked.

A phone bought through a carrier, often on a monthly plan, can be locked to that carrier. It still has the eSIM chip, but it refuses eSIMs from anyone else, including travel eSIMs.

How to check

  • iPhone: Settings, General, About. Next to Carrier Lock, you want to see “No SIM restrictions”.
  • Android: there is no universal screen. Ask your carrier, or try a SIM from another network.

Why a compatible phone can still say no

If your model is on the list but the eSIM will not install, it is almost always one of these three:

It is carrier locked

A phone tied to one carrier can have an eSIM chip but refuse other providers' eSIMs.

Ask your carrier to unlock it. Many do it free once the phone is paid off.

It is a regional version

Some phones sold in certain countries, like most iPhones from mainland China, ship without eSIM.

Look for an EID in Settings, About. No EID there means this version has no eSIM.

It is older than it looks

Models from before about 2018, and many budget phones, simply lack the chip.

Some phones are eSIM only

Here is a twist: some new phones have no SIM tray at all.

  • iPhone 14 and newer sold in the US
  • iPhone Air, everywhere
  • iPhone 17 family and newer in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and the Gulf states
  • Pixel 10 and 11 (not the Folds or 10a) sold in the US

With these, a travel eSIM is not just the easy option, it is the only one. A local plastic SIM simply will not fit.

My phone has no eSIM. Now what?

You still have options:

Buy a local SIM when you land

A physical SIM from a shop at your destination works in any unlocked phone. Expect a queue and, in many countries, an ID check.

Use a virtual number, no eSIM needed

eSIM compatibility questions

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?+

Dial *#06# or open Settings, then About. If you see an EID number, your phone has an eSIM chip. You can also look for an Add eSIM option in your mobile network or SIM settings.

Which iPhones support eSIM?+

iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR from 2018, and every iPhone since, including the SE from 2020. Most iPhones sold in mainland China are the exception and have no eSIM.

Which Samsung phones support eSIM?+

Galaxy S21 and newer, the Z Fold and Z Flip foldables, and some A series models in certain regions. Galaxy S20 has eSIM outside the US. Models sold in Hong Kong and mainland China lack eSIM up to the S25.

Which Google Pixel phones support eSIM?+

Pixel 4 and every Pixel since support eSIM everywhere. Pixel 3 and 3a support it except for some carrier and country versions, and Pixel 2 only with Google Fi.

Does the Xiaomi 14 Ultra support eSIM?+

No. Xiaomi's own global specs list two nano-SIMs only, even though many sites say otherwise. Several other Xiaomi models do support eSIM in their global versions.

Why does my phone not show an eSIM option?+

Usually one of three reasons: it is an older or budget model, it is a regional version sold without eSIM, or it is locked to a carrier that hides the option.

Does my phone need to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM?+

Yes. A phone locked to one carrier can refuse other providers' eSIMs. On iPhone, Settings, General, About shows Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions when it is unlocked.

Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?+

Yes, on most eSIM phones. Your home SIM keeps your number for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data.

Do iPads support eSIM?+

Cellular iPads from 2018 on do. Wi-Fi-only iPads have no mobile connection at all, so they cannot use an eSIM.

What if my phone does not support eSIM?+

You can buy a local physical SIM at your destination. You can also still use a SimVala virtual number or calling minutes, which work from your browser with no eSIM needed.

Are some phones eSIM only?+

Yes. iPhone 14 and newer sold in the US, the iPhone Air everywhere, and US Pixel 10 and 11 models have no SIM tray, so eSIM is the only option.
