"Temporary" means three different things
People say "temporary number" for three very different products. The big difference is how long each one lasts, and who else can use it.
- A free public number is shared by everyone who visits the site, and its texts are posted publicly. It is "temporary" because it gets blocked and swapped out often. Our guide on how to receive SMS online explains why that is risky.
- A one-time SMS code gives you a private number just long enough to catch one text. From $0.50, refunded if no code arrives.

How long should your temporary number last?
Keep the number as long as anything still uses it. That sounds obvious, but it is the mistake that locks people out. Many apps text a new code when you log in on a new phone or reset a password, sometimes months after you signed up.

Look at the price gap. In the United States a number costs $2.99 a month, or $11.88 for a whole year. So there, if you might need it for 4 months or more, the year is cheaper. The gap is different in every country, which is what the planner above is for.
What happens when a temporary number ends
Phone numbers get recycled. Yours will go to someone new eventually. In the US alone, the FCC estimates that about 35 million numbers are disconnected and passed on to new owners every year. US rules make carriers wait at least 45 days before reusing one, and then it is fair game.

The last step is the risky one. If an old account still lists that number, the new owner could receive its login or reset codes. That is why a number should never end while something still depends on it.

Temporary is not a free pass
A temporary number keeps your real number private. It is not a way to dodge a ban, deceive people, or break an app's rules, and using one for fraud is illegal. Some strict apps also refuse virtual numbers, so no provider can promise every sign-up works.
