How to activate an eSIM

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, then switch it on and turn on data roaming for it when you land. Installing puts it on your phone. Activating is when it connects, and that is when it starts working. Pick your phone for the exact steps:

  1. 1Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. 2Open Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data), then Add eSIM.

Installing vs activating: the difference

People use "activate" for two different steps, and mixing them up is the most common reason an eSIM seems not to work.

Installing

Downloads the eSIM onto your phone. It needs an internet connection once, usually Wi-Fi, which is why doing it at home is easiest. After this, the eSIM sits on your phone as a second line, switched off or unused.

Activating

Switching the line on and letting it connect to a network. For a travel eSIM that means, once you arrive: turn the line on, choose it for mobile data, and allow data roaming for it. That last step matters. Travel eSIMs connect through partner networks, which your phone treats as roaming, so with roaming off it will not connect.

What you need before you start

  • A phone that supports eSIM, and is unlocked. Most phones from 2019 on do. A carrier-locked phone can refuse a travel eSIM. Check your phone
  • Wi-Fi, once. To download the eSIM. After that it works on its own.
  • Your QR code on a second screen. It is in your SimVala dashboard. Your phone's camera cannot scan its own screen, so open it on a laptop or tablet, or print it.

How do I activate an eSIM?+

Install it first: in your phone's settings, choose Add eSIM and scan the QR code, on Wi-Fi. Then, when you arrive, switch the line on, choose it for mobile data, and turn on data roaming for it.

When should I activate my travel eSIM?+

Install it at home a day or two before you fly, then switch it on when you land. At SimVala, a plan's days start when you activate it, not when you buy it.

What is the difference between installing and activating an eSIM?+

Installing downloads the eSIM onto your phone, which needs Wi-Fi once. Activating is when the line is switched on and connects to a network, which is when it starts working.

Does an eSIM activate automatically?+

Why do I need to turn on data roaming?+

A travel eSIM connects through partner networks abroad, which your phone treats as roaming. Turning on data roaming for the travel line is normal and does not add charges from us. Keep it off on your home line.

How long does it take to activate an eSIM?+

Installing takes about two minutes. When you land, the line usually connects within a few minutes of switching it on.

Can I install the same QR code twice?+

Usually not. Each QR code installs once, so do not delete the eSIM until your trip is over.
