Dual SIM with eSIM: two lines, one phone

Most eSIM phones can run two lines at once. Both can make and receive calls and texts. Only one uses mobile data at a time, and you choose which.

Set up your two lines

Label your lines Home and Travel eSIM, then set:

  • CallsHomePeople reach you on your usual number. Your home carrier may charge roaming for calls.

The rules of dual SIM

Three things work differently from a single-SIM phone. Know them and nothing will surprise you.

1. Only one line uses data at a timeBoth lines stay reachable for calls and texts, but mobile data runs on the line you choose.
2. A call on one line can block the otherOn iPhone, calls to your other number go to voicemail while you are on a call, unless that line has Wi-Fi Calling. On Pixel 8 and earlier they cannot come through; from Pixel 8a you can answer and put the first call on hold.
3. You pick the line for each call and textThere is a default line, but you can choose the other one per call, and on iPhone per contact too.

How to set it up

First install the eSIM (see our iPhone and Android guides). Then set which line does what:

iPhone

  • Settings, Cellular: tap each line and set a Cellular Plan Label.
  • Default Voice Line: the number for calls and texts to people not in your contacts.
  • Cellular Data: choose the one line that uses data.
  • Allow Cellular Data Switching: leave off when abroad.
  • In Contacts, choose a line for any contact who should always get your other number.

Android

  • Pixel: Settings, Network & internet, SIMs. Samsung: Connections, SIM manager.
  • Rename each line so you can tell them apart.
  • Pixel: under Your primary SIMs, set Calls, Texts, and Data. Samsung: Primary SIM.
  • Automatic data switching (Auto data switch on Samsung): leave off when abroad.
  • When you dial, the phone can ask which SIM to use.

Dual SIM for travel

This is the setup most people want: your home line for calls and texts, a travel eSIM for data.

  • Home line: calls and texts, data roaming off.
  • Travel eSIM: mobile data, data roaming on.
  • Automatic data switching: off, so data never falls back to Home.

Want a second number without a second SIM?

A virtual number gives you another phone number that works through a dashboard, on any phone, with no SIM slot needed. It is a good fit for sign-ups, selling online, or a number in another country.

Dual SIM is for two full phone lines on your phone. A virtual number is for an extra number you can use anywhere, even from a laptop.

What is dual SIM with eSIM?+

It means running two phone lines on one phone, usually your SIM card plus an eSIM, or two eSIMs on newer phones. Both lines can make and receive calls and texts.

Can I use two eSIMs at the same time?+

On iPhone 13 and later, and on Pixel 7 and later, yes: two eSIMs can be active together. Older eSIM phones run one eSIM next to a SIM card.

Can both lines use mobile data at once?+

No. Only one line uses mobile data at a time. You choose which one in settings.

What happens if someone calls my other line while I am on a call?+

On iPhone, the call goes to voicemail, unless that line's carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling and it is on. On Pixel 8 and earlier, it cannot come through. From Pixel 8a, you can answer it and the first call goes on hold.

Do both numbers work at the same time?+

Yes. With Dual SIM Dual Standby, both numbers can make and receive calls and texts. Only data is limited to one line at a time.

How do I choose which line to call from?+

Set a default line for calls in settings. On iPhone, you can also pick the line for each call or for each contact. On Android, the dialler lets you pick a SIM when you call.

Does dual SIM drain the battery faster?+

Two active lines use a little more power than one, because the phone stays connected to two networks. Switch off a line you are not using to save battery.

Can I use dual SIM abroad?+

Yes, and it is the best travel setup: your home line for calls and texts, a travel eSIM for data. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only.

Can I have two WhatsApp accounts with dual SIM?+

Messaging apps are tied to one number per account. Dual SIM gives you two numbers, but a second account in the same app depends on that app's own support for multiple accounts.

Do I need dual SIM to have a second number?+

Not necessarily. A virtual number gives you a second number that works through an app or dashboard, with no second SIM needed.
