Mobile data in Brazil: what to know

All 3 carriers on this page run their own network. Each one has its own APN, so make sure you copy the settings for the carrier named on your SIM, not the one with the best coverage.

Vivo, Claro and TIM use a username and password in the APN. Type them exactly as shown. Where an authentication type is given: Vivo uses PAP and TIM uses PAP.

Vivo and TIM list separate settings for picture messages (MMS). If texts work but photos in messages do not, those are the values to check. Claro also has a second APN for some plans or devices, shown on its card.

The carriers here use the mobile country code 724, the first three digits of every network code in Brazil. Android usually fills in the MCC and MNC from the SIM, so you rarely need to type them.

Visiting Brazil with your own SIM? Keep your home APN: roaming data still goes through your home carrier. You only need these settings with a local SIM bought in Brazil. Or skip the SIM shop with a Brazil eSIM, which sets its own APN.

How to change the APN

iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then Mobile Data (Mobile Service or Cellular in some regions).
  2. Tap Mobile Data Options (with two lines, tap the line first), then Mobile Data Network.
  3. Type the APN, username and password into the Mobile Data section.
  4. Go back. The change saves by itself.

No Mobile Data Network option? Your carrier locks it, and the iPhone sets the APN for you.

Android

  1. Open Settings, then Network and internet (Connections on Samsung).
  2. Tap SIMs or Mobile networks, pick your line, then Access Point Names.
  3. Tap + or Add, and fill in the fields shown above for your carrier.
  4. Save from the menu, then tap the new APN so it is selected.

Made a mess of it? Reset to default in the same menu brings the original settings back.

Still no data in Brazil? Check these

  1. Data and roaming on

Mobile data must be on, and airplane mode off. On a local SIM, data roaming can stay off.

  2. The APN, letter for letter

For Vivo that is zap.vivo.com.br. One wrong dot or capital is enough to block data.

  3. Username only if listed

Only Vivo, Claro and TIM need one here. Leave it blank for the rest.

  4. Select it and restart

On Android, tap the entry so its dot is filled. Then restart the phone and open a website.

Calls and texts work, only data does not? That points to the APN, because calls and normal texts do not depend on it. If nothing works at all, the SIM itself may not be active yet: ask the shop or the carrier.

Brazil APN settings, answered

What is the Vivo APN?+

The Vivo internet APN is zap.vivo.com.br, with username vivo and password vivo.

What is the Claro APN?+

The Claro internet APN is java.claro.com.br, with username Claro and password Claro. Some plans use a different APN, listed on this page.

What is the TIM APN?+

The TIM internet APN is timbrasil.br, with username tim and password tim.

Which carriers in Brazil need a username and password?+

Vivo, Claro and TIM use a username and password in the APN. For all of them, leave both fields blank.

Do I need to set an APN in Brazil?+

Usually not. Your phone reads the APN from the SIM and sets it for you. You only need to add it by hand if mobile data does not work, often after moving a phone between networks or on an unlocked import.

I am visiting Brazil. Should I change my APN?+

Not if you use your own SIM: roaming uses your home carrier's APN. You only need the settings on this page if you buy a local SIM from a carrier in Brazil.

Will a wrong APN break my phone?+

No. At worst, mobile data or picture messages stop working until you fix it. On Android, Reset to default in the APN menu puts the carrier's own settings back.

Visiting Brazil? Skip the local SIM

A travel eSIM installs before you fly and usually sets its own APN. Pay in crypto, no ID, no email.
