Mobile data in Spain: what to know

All 5 carriers on this page run their own network. Each one has its own APN, so make sure you copy the settings for the carrier named on your SIM, not the one with the best coverage.

Movistar and Orange use a username and password in the APN. For the others, leave both fields empty: a username where none is needed can stop data from working. Where an authentication type is given: Vodafone uses PAP and Orange uses PAP.

None of the carriers here list separate MMS settings. Picture messages usually work with the internet APN, or the phone sets them up itself. Movistar also has a second APN for some plans or devices, shown on its card.

The carriers here use the mobile country code 214, the first three digits of every network code in Spain. Android usually fills in the MCC and MNC from the SIM, so you rarely need to type them.

Visiting Spain with your own SIM? Keep your home APN: roaming data still goes through your home carrier. You only need these settings with a local SIM bought in Spain. Or skip the SIM shop with a Spain eSIM, which sets its own APN.

How to change the APN

iPhone

Open Settings, then Mobile Data (Mobile Service or Cellular in some regions).
Tap Mobile Data Options (with two lines, tap the line first), then Mobile Data Network.
Type the APN, username and password into the Mobile Data section.
Go back. The change saves by itself.

No Mobile Data Network option? Your carrier locks it, and the iPhone sets the APN for you.

Android

Open Settings, then Network and internet (Connections on Samsung).
Tap SIMs or Mobile networks, pick your line, then Access Point Names.
Tap + or Add, and fill in the fields shown above for your carrier.
Save from the menu, then tap the new APN so it is selected.

Made a mess of it? Reset to default in the same menu brings the original settings back.

Still no data in Spain? Check these

Data and roaming on
Mobile data must be on, and airplane mode off. On a local SIM, data roaming can stay off.
The APN, letter for letter
For Movistar that is movistar.es. One wrong dot or capital is enough to block data.
Username only if listed
Only Movistar and Orange need one here. Leave it blank for the rest.
Select it and restart
On Android, tap the entry so its dot is filled. Then restart the phone and open a website.

What is the Movistar APN?+

The Movistar internet APN is movistar.es, with username MOVISTAR and password MOVISTAR. Some plans use a different APN, listed on this page.

Which carriers in Spain need a username and password?+

Movistar and Orange use a username and password in the APN. For the others, leave both fields blank.

Do I need to set an APN in Spain?+

Usually not. Your phone reads the APN from the SIM and sets it for you. You only need to add it by hand if mobile data does not work, often after moving a phone between networks or on an unlocked import.

I am visiting Spain. Should I change my APN?+

Not if you use your own SIM: roaming uses your home carrier's APN. You only need the settings on this page if you buy a local SIM from a carrier in Spain.

Will a wrong APN break my phone?+

No. At worst, mobile data or picture messages stop working until you fix it. On Android, Reset to default in the APN menu puts the carrier's own settings back.
