Are virtual numbers legal?
A virtual number is a real phone number, so it follows the same laws as any other. Numbers are handed out by licensed phone companies, and renting one is as ordinary as renting a mailbox. The law does not care whether your number lives on a SIM card or online. It cares what you do with it.
It helps to know there are three sets of rules, and people often mix them up. Breaking an app's rules is not a crime, but it can still cost you the account.

What the law cares about
- Fraud and impersonation. In the US, faking caller ID to defraud or cause harm is illegal, with fines up to $10,000 per violation.
- Unwanted marketing. Many countries require consent before a business texts you to sell something.
- Fake reviews and followers. Since October 2024, the FTC bans fake reviews and buying fake social media followers for business in the US.
- Harassment. Using new numbers to reach someone who has cut contact can be a crime in many countries.
About ID checks. Some countries require the company issuing their numbers to check ID. For those numbers, our upstream provider asks for verification before fulfilment. We tell you before anything is sent, and if you decline, the order is cancelled and refunded to your balance.
Are virtual numbers safe?
For you, a virtual number is usually safer than handing out your real one. Every sign-up form, marketplace, and loyalty scheme that gets your real number is one more place it can leak from, get sold, or end up on a spam list. A virtual number takes that hit instead, and you can drop it.
That does not make it risk-free. Here are the real risks, each with a simple fix:

Can a virtual number be traced?
Not by the people you contact. By the provider, yes, and by the law, through the provider. Here is who can see what, from least to most:

Scammers use virtual numbers and fake caller ID too, often making a call look local or look like your bank. The FCC's advice is simple: do not trust a number just because it looks familiar. Hang up and call the official number yourself.
