Can you use a hotspot with an eSIM?

Yes, on most phones. With your travel eSIM set as the data line, turn on the hotspot and your laptop or tablet shares its data. Two catches: some travel plans limit sharing, and a laptop uses far more data than a phone. See how much yours will use:

How to turn on a hotspot with an eSIM

First, make sure the travel eSIM is your data line. A hotspot shares whichever line is set for mobile data. If that is still your home line, you share expensive roaming data instead. Our guide to activating an eSIM shows how.

On iPhone

  1. 1 Settings, then Cellular: set Cellular Data to the travel eSIM.
  2. 2 Settings, then Personal Hotspot: turn on Allow Others to Join.
  3. 3 Set a Wi-Fi password of at least eight characters.
  4. 4 On your laptop or tablet, join the iPhone's Wi-Fi network.

On Android

  1. 1 In your SIM settings, set mobile data to the travel eSIM.
  2. 2 Settings, then Network and internet, then Hotspot and tethering, then Wi-Fi hotspot.
  3. 3 Turn it on and set a password. On Samsung it is under Connections, Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
  4. 4 Connect your other device. Android supports up to 10 devices by Wi-Fi.

Does a travel eSIM allow hotspot?

Usually, but not always. Whether you can share depends on the plan and on the local network:

  • Some providers cap sharing. Holafly, for example, limits hotspot sharing on its travel plans to 1 GB a day.
  • Google's Android help notes that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra for it.
  • Apple notes that Personal Hotspot needs a carrier that supports it.

Why a hotspot eats data so fast

A laptop is not a phone. It downloads system updates, syncs cloud folders, and loads full desktop websites, often without asking. Two real figures:

  • Netflix in HD uses up to 3 GB an hour.
  • A one-to-one Zoom call in HD needs 1.2 Mbps each way, roughly 1 GB an hour.

How to use less

  • Pause cloud sync and automatic updates while you are on the hotspot.
  • On Windows, set the hotspot's Wi-Fi as a metered connection, so Windows holds back big downloads.
  • Turn video quality down in streaming apps and video calls.

Hotspot not working?

  1. 1Check the travel eSIM is set for mobile data, and its data roaming is on.
  2. 2On iPhone, if Personal Hotspot is missing, turn Cellular Data on first.
  3. 3Turn the hotspot off and on, then restart the phone.
  4. 4Still nothing? The local network may not allow sharing. Use the phone itself, or ask us which networks your plan uses.

Does hotspot drain the battery?+

It uses more battery than normal. Keep the phone plugged in for long sessions, ideally from your own charger.
