Is buying an eSIM with crypto legal?
Yes, in most countries. Paying with crypto is legal almost everywhere, and a travel eSIM is an ordinary purchase. Three things can change that: your country's rules on crypto payments, tax on spending crypto, and local SIM rules. Check all three for your country:

The three questions that decide it
"Is it legal?" is really three smaller questions. Almost everyone gets three yeses. Here is what each one means:
- 1 Can I pay with crypto where I live?Legal in most countries. A handful ban crypto payments, or crypto altogether.
- 2 Is spending crypto taxable?Often, yes, in a small way. Many tax offices treat spending crypto like selling it.
- 3 Can I buy the product without ID?SIM ID rules usually apply to local SIMs, not travel eSIMs bought from abroad.
Where paying with crypto is restricted
A few countries ban crypto payments, or crypto altogether. These are the clearest cases we could source directly:

Do you pay tax when you buy with crypto?
Sometimes, and it surprises people. The US tax office, the IRS, says that paying for something with crypto means you exchanged the coin, so any rise in its value since you got it is a capital gain. The UK's HMRC says the same: using tokens to pay for goods or services is a disposal.
Here is how that works on a small purchase. Say you bought some Bitcoin for $15, and it is now worth $20. You spend it on a $20 eSIM. You have made a $5 gain, and in those countries it belongs on your tax return.
How to keep it simple
- Pay with a stablecoin like USDT or USDC. Its value barely moves, so there is rarely a gain.
- Keep a note of the date, the coin, the amount, and its dollar value when you paid.
- Check your own country's rules, or ask a tax adviser if your amounts are large.
Is buying an eSIM without ID legal?
Generally, yes. Many countries require ID to buy a SIM card, but those laws apply to SIMs sold inside the country. A travel eSIM is bought from abroad and connects through local partner networks, much like roaming, so it usually needs no ID. Our SIM registration guide shows the rules country by country.
Virtual numbers are a little different. For numbers in a few countries, the upstream provider must check ID before the number is issued. If that applies, we tell you before anything is sent, and you can decline for a refund to your balance.

Does paying with crypto make me anonymous?+
Not by itself. Most blockchains are public, and exchanges that checked your ID can see where coins went. Monero hides the payment itself.
