How Amazon checks your number
Amazon lets you create an account with a mobile number, then texts a one-time password (OTP) to prove the number is yours. Some Amazon stores ask for a phone number even when you sign up with an email.
You type the OTP, usually six digits, on the next screen. If Amazon thinks a sign-up looks risky, it may show a puzzle first and send the text after.
Amazon also uses the number for two-step sign-in if you switch that on, and it may text a code when you log in on a new device.
Why use a one-time number
If you just want a shopping account and only need to pass the check at sign-up, a single code does the job. Your own number stays off the account, and you can add an email for signing in later.

Tap the link to resend the OTP once, then give it a minute. The number stays active for about 15 minutes, so there is time.

That is Amazon being careful about the sign-up, not a problem with the number. Solve the puzzle, then ask for the text.
The time ran out
If no OTP reaches your order page in about 15 minutes, the full amount goes back to your balance. Try a number from a different country next.
