How ChatGPT checks your number
ChatGPT is made by OpenAI. OpenAI may ask for a phone number when you sign up, or later when you set up its developer platform to get API keys. Not every sign-up gets asked.
When it does ask, you type the number and OpenAI sends a short code by text. You enter it on the next screen and the check is done.
OpenAI only accepts numbers from countries where it offers its service. It also limits how many accounts one number can verify, so a number that has been used before may be refused.
Why use a one-time number
ChatGPT's phone check is usually a one-time gate. Once your account is confirmed, everyday sign-in normally goes through your email, or a Google, Apple or Microsoft login, not a text. That makes a one-time number a good fit here.

A digit went missing
OpenAI's box expects the full number with the country code. Copy it straight from your order page so nothing gets dropped.
The code is slow
Wait a minute or two, then ask OpenAI to resend. You have about 15 minutes, and a number that never gets a code costs you nothing in the end.
