How to keep your own number abroad
Use both lines at once. Most phones from recent years are dual SIM: your home SIM and a travel eSIM can be active together.

- Calls and texts to your usual number still reach you. Check your carrier's rates for calls you answer abroad.

What about WhatsApp and iMessage?
Chat apps run over the internet, so they keep working on your usual number over the travel eSIM's data. Do not change the number in the app for a trip. If an app ever asks you to verify again, the code goes to your home number, which is the best reason to keep that SIM in your phone.
