Why people count in sats
A satoshi, or sat, is the smallest piece of a Bitcoin: 0.00000001 BTC. A Bitcoin is made of 100 million of them, the same way a dollar is made of 100 cents. As Bitcoin's price went up, everyday amounts became long decimals, so many people switched to sats.
- Whole numbers are easier to read5,000 sats is simpler than 0.00005 BTC, and there is no zero to miss. Fewer zeros means fewer mistakes when you send.
- You do not need a whole BitcoinA price of one Bitcoin can look out of reach. Counting in sats makes it clear that you can own and spend any small part of one.
- Fees are already in satsWallets and fee trackers show the network fee in sats per virtual byte (sat/vB). Thinking in sats makes the fee easy to compare.
- Wallets support itMany wallets let you show your balance in sats with one setting. Some show BTC, sats and your local money side by side.
Bitcoin units: BTC, mBTC, bits, sats and msats
All of these are the same coin, cut into different sizes. Today almost everyone uses only two: BTC for big amounts and sats for small ones.
| Unit | In sats | In BTC | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| BitcoinBTC | 100,000,000 | 1 | Prices on exchanges and big amounts |

| Bit (microbitcoin)bits or μBTC | 100 | 0.000001 | A few wallets offer it; easy to mix up with sats |
| Satoshisat | 1 | 0.00000001 | Small payments, balances and fees |

How to convert sats by hand
Sats to BTC
Divide by 100,000,000. 25,000 sats ÷ 100,000,000 = 0.00025 BTC.
BTC to dollars
Multiply by the price. 0.00025 BTC × $81,774.51 = $20.44.
Dollars to sats
Divide by the price, then multiply by 100,000,000. $10 ÷ $81,774.51 × 100,000,000 = about 12,229 sats.
What a Bitcoin network fee costs in sats
Bitcoin fees are not a percentage of what you send. They depend on how much space your payment takes in a block, measured in virtual bytes, times the fee rate in sats per virtual byte. Sending $10 or $10,000 from one coin costs the same fee.
A simple payment from one coin to one address, with change coming back to you, is about 140 virtual bytes. Paying from many small coins makes the payment bigger, so it costs more.
Very tiny amounts can be too small to send. Bitcoin nodes refuse outputs below a dust limit: 546 sats for old-style addresses and 294 sats for SegWit addresses starting with bc1q. Amounts close to the fee are also not worth sending.
Spending sats? You can top up SimVala in Bitcoin and pay for eSIMs, numbers and SMS codes. No fee is added on top. See paying with Bitcoin.
On-chain only, no Lightning. SimVala takes regular Bitcoin payments on the main chain. Do not pay a SimVala address from a Lightning wallet.
