Signal link generator

In short

Type a phone number and get a signal.me link that opens a Signal chat with it, plus a QR code. Signal links cannot carry a first message. If you want people to reach you without seeing your number, share a Signal username link from the app instead.

How a Signal link is built

The format: https://signal.me/#p/+<number>. The part after # is never sent to Signal's website: it stays in the browser and is handed to the app.

The example link, part by part

https://signal.me/#p/+447700900461

  1. 1Signal's link address

    https://signal.me/

A plain web address. On a phone with Signal it opens the app. Anywhere else it shows a page asking the person to install Signal.

  2. 2The private part starts

    #p/

Everything after # is a fragment. Browsers never send it to the website, so Signal's server does not learn which number was opened.

  3. 3The number

    +447700900461

Full international form, and here the + stays. That is one way Signal links differ from WhatsApp ones.

What a Signal link reveals

Signal has three kinds of link. Pick one based on what you are happy for strangers to see.

Who uses Signal links, and why

Signal encrypts every message and call end to end and keeps almost no data about who talks to whom. A link helps the right people find that private channel.

  • Journalists and their sourcesA Signal link on a tips page gives sources a private way in, without an email inbox that leaves a trail.
  • Lawyers and clinicsClients can send documents and voice notes over an encrypted chat instead of ordinary email.
  • Organisers and clubsOne contact link on a poster lets newcomers reach a coordinator before they join any group.
  • Anyone leaving SMS behindPut the link where you used to write "text me". Messages then travel encrypted, not over the phone network.

Phone link or username link?

This generator makes the phone number link, which anyone can build. Signal also has usernames: in the app, open Settings, tap your profile, then your username, to share a username link or QR code that never reveals your number.

A Signal username is a nickname plus a dot and at least two digits, like river.27. You can change or delete it whenever you like, which makes it easy to retire a link that spread too far.

Signal links cannot carry a first message. They open an empty chat, and the person writes the first message themselves.

Two settings decide if the link works

In Signal, open Settings, then Privacy, then Phone Number. "Who can see my number" controls whether people you chat with see it. "Who can find me by number" decides whether a phone link reaches you at all.

Set the second one to Nobody and a signal.me phone link will not find you, by design. Share a username link instead.

Share your Signal contact safely

  1. Show the QR in person

At a meeting, let people scan the code from your screen instead of reading your number out loud.

  2. Use a username for public posts

On a website, poster or social bio, share the username link from the app, not the phone link.

  3. Reset it when it spreads

If a username link ends up somewhere you did not plan, reset it in Signal and share the new one.

Keep your personal number out of it

A signal.me phone link reveals the number. If you want people to reach you on Signal without knowing your personal number, register Signal on a second number, or share a username link from the app.

A second phone number gets sign-up codes and calls, so you can register Signal on it and share the link freely. Need only the code? A one-time SMS code number costs less than a dollar.

Writing the message too? The WhatsApp text formatter adds bold, italics, lists and quotes.

Signal links, answered

How do I make a Signal link?+

Use https://signal.me/#p/+ followed by the full international number, like https://signal.me/#p/+447700900123. The generator above builds it and a QR code.

Can a Signal link include a message?+

No. Signal links open a chat but cannot prefill a message.

Does a Signal link show my phone number?+

A phone number link does, because the number is in the link. A username link from the Signal app does not.

Why does a Signal link say the number is not on Signal?+

Either the number has no Signal account, or its owner set "Who can find me by number" to Nobody. Signal does not say which, to protect the owner.

What does the # in a signal.me link do?+

It keeps the number out of Signal's web server logs. Browsers never send the part after # to the website. They hand it to the Signal app instead.

Is the Signal link generator private?+

Yes. It runs in your browser and never sends the number anywhere.
